Estimates of U.S. Population by Age, Sex, Race and Hispanic Origin: July 1, 2008 — Is the nation getting younger or older? Are there more men than women? Is the minority population growing? National-level population estimates cross-tabulated by these demographic characteristics provide the answers. (Scheduled for release May 14.)

Estimates of State and County Population by Age, Sex, Race and Hispanic Origin: July 1, 2008 — More of the nation's 3,142 counties are becoming majority-minority, meaning more than 50 percent of their population is made up of people other than single-race, non-Hispanic whites. Tables of population estimates by demographic characteristics are available for the nation's states and counties. (Scheduled for release May 14.)

Population Change in Central and Outlying Counties of Metropolitan Statistical Areas: 2000 to 2007 — Analysis of population change and the demographic components of change in both core and outlying portions of metropolitan areas. This change is examined by region and division and metropolitan area population size category, as well as for 12 of the most populous metropolitan areas. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid/late May.)

Population Dynamics of the Great Plains: 1950 to 2007 — Details population trends over the last more than half century in the 376 counties within this vast area stretching across the nation's midsection. Uses a combination of decennial census data and annual population estimates to analyze age structure and components of change, among other topics. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late May.)

Who Could Afford to Buy a Home in 2004? — The latest in a periodic series of reports measuring changes in housing affordability for families and individuals (both owners and renters). This report examines the affordability of homes at different price levels, chances of affordability by demographic characteristic, reasons why families and unrelated individuals couldn't afford a home, and the impact of possible policy changes (such as modified down payments and interest rates) on affordability for renters. The data were collected from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in May.)

Computer and Internet Use in the United States: 2007 — New national-level data show who is accessing the Internet and why, cross-tabulated by age, sex, race, Hispanic-origin, educational attainment and employment status. Other data show the results of computer and Internet usage by region, school enrollment, poverty status, gender, disability status, age group and income. State data shows Internet usage at home versus any location. Also included is whether people are using broadband or dial-up for Internet access. Data come from the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late May/early June.)

Public Education Finances: 2007 — This report offers a comprehensive look at school district revenues, expenditures, debt and assets. Highlights include spending on salaries, construction, support services, administration and transportation. These figures allow users to examine per pupil expenditures, and compare federal, state and local funding sources for public education systems by state. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late May.)

2007 Economic Census of Island Areas, Geographic Area Series: Guam — The data include the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of employees and other data items for Guam -- a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean -- and its 19 election districts. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late May.)

2007 Economic Census: Mining Industry Series — This is a series of national-level data files on the mining sector (NAICS 21). These include data for industries such as crude petroleum, natural gas, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, sand, gravel and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, shipments, payroll, number of employees, value of product shipments, and other data items by industry. These data will be released through June 2009.

2007 Economic Census: Construction Industry Series — This is a series of national-level data files on the construction sector (NAICS 23). These include data for residential and nonresidential building contractors, civil engineering and specialty trade contractors, builders, remodelers, industrial and commercial construction and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, value of business done, payroll, the number of employees, and other data items by industry. These data will be released through June 2009.

2007 Economic Census: Professional, Scientific and Technical Services Industry Series — This is a series of national-level data files on the professional, scientific and technical services sector (NAICS 54). These include data for industries such as legal services, accounting and tax preparation services, engineering and architectural services and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, revenue, payroll, number of employees, value of product line revenue and other data items by industry. These data will be released through October 2009.

Facts for Features

Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act (July 26) — In observance of the 19th anniversary of the enactment of this landmark law, the Census Bureau presents from its demographic subject areas a wide array of statistical information about people with disabilities. (Scheduled for release May 26.)

Profile America and Al Día (Spanish) for May and June — Profile America is a daily, 60-second audio feature that uses interesting vignettes from key events, observances or commemorations for that day to highlight information collected by the Census Bureau. Upcoming segments include honoring our elders in "American Seniors" (May 13) and battening down for the "Hurricane Season" (June 4). 2010 Census

Morial Named Chair of 2010 Census Advisory Committee — May 7 — Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke named Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, as chair of the Census Advisory Committee. Morial was mayor of New Orleans (1994-2002) and president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The committee offers a broad, national-level perspective on issues affecting the decennial census.

Demographic

Census 2000 Foreign-Born Population Map Series by Selected Countries of Birth — May 7 — These state level maps show percent distributions and some detailed socioeconomic characteristics from Census 2000 for the foreign-born population in the United States and Puerto Rico for selected countries of birth, such as Mexico, China, the Philippines, India and El Salvador. Comparative maps for the native and total foreign-born populations are also provided. The socioeconomic characteristics include poverty rate, public assistance income, labor force participation rate, language ability and year of entry for noncitizens.

Educational Attainment in the United States: 2008 — April 27 — Workers with a bachelor's degree earn about $26,000 more on average than workers with just a high school diploma. That's just one of the statistics available from Internet tables from the Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement. The tables show education levels by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, nativity, occupation and other demographic characteristics at the national level.

2007 Economic Census: Manufacturing Industry Series — May 7 — This is a series of national-level data files on the manufacturing sector (NAICS 31). These include data for industries such as bottled water, plastic bottles, breakfast cereal, retail bakery products, mobile homes, nitrogenous fertilizers and others. The files provide data on the value of product shipments, number of establishments, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released through September 2009.

Quarterly Public-Employee Retirement Systems Survey: 4th Quarter 2008 — April 30 — This survey provides quarterly summary data on assets, revenue and expenditure of the largest public-employee retirement systems in the United States, which comprise about 85 percent of national activity among such entities. It provides the most current data about investment decisions by public employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. These reports are published three months after each calendar quarter, and show national financial transactions and trends for the past five years.

2007 Economic Census: Securities and Commodities Exchanges — April 28 — These are the first in a series of national-level data files on the finance and insurance sectors in 2007. The files provide data on the number of establishments, revenue, payroll, number of employees, value of product line sales and other data items by industry.
