2. Dr. Mary Woo to Give 2013 NINR Director’s Lecture

Dr. Mary Woo will give the third NINR Director’s Lecture on 10:30 -11:30 a.m. on May 21, 2013 in the NIH Clinical Center’s Lipsett Amphitheater.  Dr. Woo, a Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Nursing and well-known cardiovascular researcher, will discuss brain-heart interactions in a lecture entitled “It's All in the Mind: Heart Failure and the Brain.”

Dr. Mary WooDr. Woo’s research transcends many areas including patient care and cardiovascular and neurologic diseases. Her current investigations suggest that heart failure patients have significant brain damage in areas that dramatically impact cognition, emotion, and breathing. By developing interventions that minimize or reverse the brain damage in heart failure, Dr. Woo aims to improve health outcomes for heart failure patients and decrease health care costs.

In addition to numerous presentations, she has published more than 100 articles and a number of book chapters in the area of cardiovascular disease. Among other awards, Dr. Woo was recognized as a “Pillar of Cardiovascular Nursing Research” by the AHA Council on Cardiovascular Nursing.

The NINR Director’s Lecture is an annual event, designed to bring the nation’s top nurse scientists to the NIH campus to share their work and interests with a trans-disciplinary audience. The lecture was initiated as part of the year-long observation of the Institute’s first 25 years at the NIH.

3. NINR GPP Students Showcase Research in NIH Graduate Student Research Symposium

Kristin FillerOn January 15, research posters by NINR IRP Intramural Research Training Award recipients Jennifer Dine, Alyson E. Hanish, Sheeba Nadarajah, Kristin Filler (pictured, right), and Christina Slota (pictured, below) were featured at the 9th NIH Graduate Student Research Symposium, the premier event for NIH graduate students to showcase their research to the NIH community. Their projects exemplify the depth and diversity of the NINR Intramural Research Program and exciting future pathways for nursing research:

  • Jennifer Dine, University of Missouri, presented A Functional Genomic Screen to Identify Regulators of TRAIL-Mediated Apoptosis in Breast Cancer Cells;

  • Alyson Hanish, MSN, RN, University of Iowa, presented Pineal Hypoplasia and Decreased Melatonin in Patients with PAX6 Haploinsufficiency;

  • Sheeba Nadarajah, PhD, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, presented Psycho-Socio-Spiritual Healing in Cardiac Rehab Patients;

  • Kristin Filler, Virginia Commonwealth University, presented and won an award for her poster on Comparing Fatigue Scores Across Localized Radiation Treatment Modalities for Non-Metastatic Prostate Cancer;

  • Christina Slota, University of Pennsylvania, presented Caregiving Stress and Illness: Literature Review and Conceptual Model.

Christina SlotaIn addition to poster presentations, the Symposium also hosts keynote and opening talks from world-renown scientists, policymakers, and senior NIH leadership.

4.  80th Meeting of the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research

The open session of the 80th meeting of the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research (NACNR) will take place on May 21, 2013, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. in Conference Room 6C6, Building 31, C wing, on the campus of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Visitors are welcome to attend.

The NACNR meets three times a year to provide recommendations on the direction and support of the nursing, biomedical, social, and behavioral research that forms the evidence base for nursing practice.

Please note: Council members will review and discuss new research concepts for future NINR funding opportunities and initiatives during the May 2013 NACNR meeting instead of the September 2013 NACNR meeting.

More information about the NACNR is available online at: www.ninr.nih.gov/AboutNINR/NACNR.

Information on visiting the NIH campus is available online at: www.nih.gov/about/visitor/index.htm.

5. Training Opportunities Through NINR’s Division of Intramural Research

The NINR Division of Intramural Research is training the next generation of nurse-scientists in its ongoing research programs as well as through intense short term training programs, such as the Summer Genetics Institute and the Symptoms Methodologies Boot Camps (Pain, Fatigue and Sleep).

Summer Genetics Institute (SGI):

Twenty-four participants (nursing doctoral faculty, doctoral students, and post-doctoral fellows) from over 20 universities across the country completed the four-week SGI in June 2012 and 254 have completed the program since 2000, resulting in numerous publications, and successful NIH training and research awards. The SGI has also contributed to the successful academic careers of many nurse scientists. Applications for SGI 2013 will be accepted from Jan. 14-March 18, 2013, and SGI 2013 will take place June 3-28, 2013.

Symptoms Methodologies Boot Camp:

The Fatigue and Sleep Methodologies Boot Camp is a one-week intensive training course on the NIH campus that provides a foundation in current fatigue and sleep methodologies for use in the participant's future research. Over 70 participants attended the Boot Camp in July 2012. The Fatigue and Sleep Methodologies Boot Camp will be held July 22-26, 2013.

These NINR Division of Intramural Research training efforts are an investment in the preparation of a strong cadre of nurse investigators and a nursing workforce capable of addressing future health care challenges and contributing to improvements in the nation’s health.
