Case Studies in Environmental Medicine

The Case Studies in Environmental Medicine (CSEM) are a series of self-instructional publications designed to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients. Continuing medical education credits, continuing nursing education units, and continuing education units are offered by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to health professionals who complete the CSEM educational activities.

ATSDR has developed two CSEMs relevant to health professionals treating asbestos-related conditions:

After completion of this educational activity, the reader should be able to:

  • Explain why asbestos may be a health hazard
  • Describe the factors contributing to asbestos toxicity
  • Identify potential environmental and occupational sources of exposure to asbestos
  • Identify evaluation and treatment protocols for persons exposed to asbestos
  • List sources of information on asbestos

Case Studies in Environmental Medicine: Taking an Exposure History

  • Discuss three important reasons for taking an exposure history,
  • Explain the process of taking an exposure history
