The 508-compliant versions of the reports presented at the June 14 and 15 meeting of the Advisory Committee to the Director are now online. You can access the three reports on our ACD website acd.od.nih.gov or by clicking the below links.
The Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) is meeting on Thursday, June 14, and Friday, June 15, 2012. During this meeting, three working groups will present their final draft reports for the ACD’s consideration:
June 14:
1:00p .m. – ACD Working Group on the Biomedical Workforce
2:45 p.m. – ACD Working Group on Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce
June 15:
9:15 a.m. – ACD Working Group on Data and Informatics
We will also have a public comment session where we hope to hear from all stakeholders about the role that NIH can play in increasing the diversity of our biomedical research workforce. We’re asking those interested in presenting comments during this session to sign up by Friday, February 10.
Last week, the Advisory Committee to the Director Working Group on the Biomedical Reserach Workforce (BMW) posted the summary of this summer’s RFI. Thank you to all that responded to the RFI for your valuable feedback.
The Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) established the Working Group on Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce to provide recommendations to the ACD and the NIH Director on ways to enhance diversity throughout the various research career stages, particularly with regard to underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, and persons from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Working Group has considered the evidence presented in “Race, Ethnicity, and NIH Research Awards” published in the August 2011 edition of Science and additional data provided by the NIH. Please also see my last feedback post about NIH’s commitment to diversity.
In response to the incredible growth of large biomedical datasets, the Director of NIH charged the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) to form a special Data and Informatics Working Group (DIWG). The DIWG was charged with providing the ACD and the NIH Director with expert advice on the management, integration, and analysis of large biomedical datasets. The DIWG is currently working to develop policy recommendations about research data spanning basic science through clinical and population research; administrative data related to grant applications, reviews, and management; and management of information technology at the NIH.
In order to enhance the discussions, NIH has published a Request for Information (RFI) related to the activities of the ACD Data and Informatics Working Group. The RFI for input into the deliberations of the Working Group can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-12-032.html. This RFI closes on Monday, March 12.
We look forward to receiving your input on this important issue.

This week I’ll be meeting with my advisory committee, the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD), in a public meeting. The last ACD meeting was in June and a lot has happened in six months. We’ll be updating them on the planning for NCATS and providing an overview of last month’s Target Validation Workshop, which brought folks from the private sector, academia, and NIH together to figure out better ways to identify new drug targets. We’ll also hear updates from the many ACD working groups, including the Working Group on Diversity in Biomedical Research Workforce and the Working Group on the Biomedical Workforce. The NIH is committed to ensuring that biomedical and behavioral research is inclusive to everyone that has the desire to pursue a career in science. I’m excited to hear about the progress of these two groups. For anyone who’s interested, the full meeting agenda is posted here.
