Rear Admiral Thomas Wears


Rear Adm. Wears is a 1983 graduate of the University of Missouri Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps program with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, Wears received a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College at National Defense University and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.

Prior to command, his sea tours included various division officer assignments aboard USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) (Gold), engineer officer aboard USS Ray (SSN 653), and executive officer aboard USS Groton (SSN 694). Ashore he served at Submarine Squadron 18 in Charleston, S.C., CINCLANTFLT Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board in Norfolk, Va., and on staff of the Chief of Naval Personnel (N133) in Washington, D.C. as the Nuclear Enlisted Community manager.

In February 2001, Wears assumed command of USS Alabama (SSBN 731)(Blue) where he served until July 2003. Following command, Wears served as the deputy commander of Submarine Squadron 17 and Submarine Squadron 19 where he worked with Naval Special Warfare to develop and implement SSGN/SOF operating concepts.

Wears’ acquisition assignments include Undersea Technology Program manager (NAVSEA 073R), Joint Test and Evaluation Test director, and Undersea Weapons Program manager (PMS 404).

Wears was selected for flag rank in June 2009. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (eight awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
