NIDA International Forum

More than 289 registrants from 53 countries participated in the NIDA International Forum, which was held June 16-19 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Participants were enthusiastic about the plenary session, workshops, and international research poster session.

NIDA International Program Awards of Excellence

The NIDA International Program inaugurated an award program to honor mentors, researchers, binational collaborative teams, and individuals whose efforts support the International Program mission.

NIDA International Program
The NIDA International Program fosters international cooperative research and the exchange of scientific information by drug abuse researchers around the globe. International scientific collaboration in drug abuse research is fostered through the following programs:

  • INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship
    Click on the above link if you are a postdoctoral researcher and would like to collaborate with a NIDA grantee. Application Deadlines: April 1 and October 1. Notification of Award: June 1 and December 1. Fellowships awarded in June must begin by December 31 of the same year. Fellowships awarded in December must begin by June 30 of the following year.   • Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Program
    Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Award (USDISCA) Program

  • NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellowship
    Click on the above link if you are a mid-career professional who wants to gain international experience at a U.S. research institute. The NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellowship is a component of the larger U.S. Department of State program, and you must contact the U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission in your home country to apply. The U.S. Department of State is the primary sponsor of the Hubert H. Humphrey Program.
    • Congratulations to the 2005–2006 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows
      On Friday, May 19, 2006, a graduation ceremony was held for the 2005-2006 Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellows at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Distinguished guests included Ms. Dale Weiss, NIDA International Program; Dr. William W. Eaton, Chair, Mental Health Department, Johns Hopkins University; Dr. James Yager, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health; Paul Schelp, Humphrey Program Officer, Office of Global Educational Programs, U.S. Department of State; and Dr. Judith Babbitts, Director, Humphrey Fellowship Program, Institute of International Education.
      The 2005-2006 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows worked with Dr. Wallace Mandell, Humphrey Coordinator and Ms. Nancy Young, Humphrey Program Coordinator at the Department of Mental Health throughout their fellowship, which included a 10 months of academic study at Johns Hopkins and a 6-week professional affiliation with a NIDA-supported grantee. The NIDA International Program wishes all of the fellows continued success in building new professional affiliations and continued collaborations.

  • Canadian Centre on Drug Abuse
    The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) is Canada's national addictions agency. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1988, the Centre provides objective, evidence-based information and advice aimed at reducing the health, social and economic harm associated with substance abuse and addictions.
  • The International Certification in Addiction Medicine for physicians. The test of clinical knowledge confirms physicians’ familiarity with the basic components of addiction medicine (pharmacology, psychiatry, general medicine, and psychology) in content areas including prevention, diagnosis, intoxication and withdrawal, treatment, medical and psychiatric comorbidities, pain management, children and adolescents, and behavioral addiction.

  • PubMed Citations for Former INVEST and Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellows
  • 2005 NIDA Distinguished International Scientist Dr. Luc Denoroy and colleagues at Université Claude Bernard de Lyon France have published their research discussing how NMDA receptors inhibit the mild hypoxia-induced dopamine efflux in the rat striatum. The short communication appeared in Synapse, 59(7): 458-961, 2006.
  • NIDA Notes Volume 20, Number 4, includes a brief summary of an international collaborative research project published by Dr. Edwin Zvartau, Pavlov Medical University, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Dr. Robert Balster, Virginia Commonwealth University. See "New Tools for Studying Inhalant Abuse," which reviews an article by Dr. Zvartau and Dr. Balster that appeared in the European Journal of Pharmacology 485(1-3):211-218, 2004.
