Mentored Career Development Programs
Access to supportive senior colleagues can be of great benefit to researchers. The Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH, pronounced “BIRCH”) and the Women's Reproductive Health Research Career Development Program are two examples of ORWH-supported mentored career development programs that help bridge a researcher's transition from clinical training to research independence.
BIRCWH is an ORWH signature initiative. ORWH co-sponsors BIRCWH with multiple NIH Institutes and Centers. Administration and grants management for the majority of the BIRCWH resides in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Development (NICHD). ORWH has awarded 63 grants to 39 institutions since the program was created in 1999, sponsoring more than 493 women and men as BIRCWH scholars. Visit BIRCWH for more information.
The Women's Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development Program emphasizes research relevant to obstetrics and gynecology and related subspecialties, including maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, and adolescent gynecology and urogynecology.
ORWH co-sponsors the WRHR Career Development program with NICHD. Grants are available to obstetrician-gynecologists who have recently completed postgraduate clinical training and will soon start basic, translational, and/or clinical research relevant to women's reproductive health. There are 17 active WRHR centers in departments of obstetrics and gynecology throughout the country. Since 1998, more than 190 researchers have participated in the WRHR program.
