(CLOSED) CADCA 2011 National Leadership
As part of SAMHSA’s participation at CADCA’s 21st Annual National Leadership Forum, SAMHSA will be hosting a session on the agency’s digital engagement strategy. The session will include an interactive discussion about how SAMHSA can develop new partnerships and new approaches to the use of social media in the area of behavioral health.
In preparation for the event, we’d like to get the conversation started by asking YOU “How can SAMHSA partner with coalitions in the use of social media?” Be as specific as possible with your ideas but be creative and be willing to think beyond conventional roles and approaches. We are looking to have a productive discussion around the suggestions that you bring to the table and hope to have some concrete ideas to test and/ or pilot after the conference.
This is your opportunity to get involved and make a difference. We look forward to seeing your ideas. Our SAMHSA New Media Team will also periodically submit ideas to encourage discussion. Let us know what you think by commenting.
Note: Session concluded on 2/10/2011, but to continue the dialog the forum has been reopened.

See if you can get NIMH to work on mental health recovery and not just genetic stuff.
Alternatives to the brain based model for our problems include viewing people’s traumatic experiences as essential sources of their symptoms and difficulties. Then handling the core trauma problem can resolve the peripheral mental health problems. We can view extreme mental and emotional experiences as a breakdown in self-support and social connection that can be resolved by restoring those connections. Mental health crises are often a spiritual emergence where a person has come to a new and uncomfortable level of understanding with their spiritual framework. This can be helped by using grounding techniques, spiritual exploration, change of environment, and support of…

Be open and honest with your social media messages.
If the facts change, change your message. It's time to have a long term dialogue on the long term effectiveness of psych meds.
We also need to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the drug war.

New media summit on behavioral health
Perhaps SAMHSA could convene a new media summit as related to behavioral health, with heavy involvement by youth, consumers/survivors, providers, family members, and new media industry reps to highlight and discuss innovative strategies for using social media to promote better mental health and wellness. Another important component to explore is the development of online support, such as online crisis "warmlines," etc.

Use Live Streaming, Podcasts and Tweetchats
On December 8th, John O’Brien appeared on CHCRadio.com's broadcast. It was my second week as Social Media Manager at chc1.com so I didn't get a chance to be as involved as I would like.
Since then, I've started having live Tweetchats about shows as they get broadcast. It would be good to see SAMHSA live stream forums and other events, produce podcasts, live tweet during when material is broadcast, and have Tweetchats to discussion important issues.

fund text number(s) that replies with brief health facts
75% of teens have cell phones. (Pew Research) Create a campaign that advertises a number to text. Automatic Texts can be tailored to demographic and current concerns. Coalitions can promote the number using campaign materials and word of mouth.
