Use of Cookies within SDI

Cookies are very small text files placed on your PC by a Web page to make specific information available to the Web page when you return. In order to use the Statistics on Depository Institutions System, you must have cookies enabled within your browser for two reasons.

1. In order to utilize the functionality of these applications, you need to specify which web site can use cookies. In this case, it would be only the FDIC - www.fdic.gov.
       To enable cookies for the FDIC using Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
   1. Open your internet browser.
   2. Select Tools
   3. Select Internet Options
   4. Click on the Privacy Tab
   5. Click on "Sites"
   6. Enter www.fdic.gov into address or website
   7. Select "Allow"
   8. Select OK.

2. The SDI System makes use of user "sessions". User sessions allow the system to "remember" your search selections and other required information as you navigate from page to page. That temporary information is stored at the FDIC server and accessed by a random session id. In order to match the user with the correct temporary information, a small piece of data, the session id, is written to a cookie on your hard drive. Nothing is written to your registry. Your user session remains active only during the current browser session. Once your browser is closed, or after a period of inactivity, the session information is deleted.

3. The SDI System has an optional peer group save feature which allows a user to retain peer groups as cookies. In this case, the cookie is saved on the user's machine in the cookie file for the specific browser that is being used. The cookie will expire after 90 days or can be deleted within the SDI system by the user. Each peer group cookie contains a comma-delimited list of ids which represent the institutions and/or bank holding companies within the peer group. In order to access the saved peer group cookies, the user must use the same physical machine and browser.
