National Wellness Week 2012

As part of National Recovery Month, SAMHSA continued National Wellness Week from September 17–23, 2012, to inspire individuals and organizations to get involved and take one step for wellness. The theme for this week was: Living Wellness.

National Wellness Week 2012 Honorary Chairperson

  • Poet, author, speaker, recovery expert, and Huffington Post blogger
  • She released a new poem about wellness and recovery as part of the "Artistic Expression for Wellness" national event on September 19 during National Wellness Week 2012.

National Wellness Week 2012 Honorary Chairperson Stanice Anderson is an addictions recovery expert, speaker, blogger, and author of nonfiction books. Stanice shared her inspiring story that includes overcoming addiction (27 years), low self-esteem, abusive relationships, as well as her journey forward with faith and confidence to realize her dreams. Recently, she became a blogger on The Huffington Post. She writes about recovery and faith for the Religion Section, in her signature storytelling style and strong, yet vulnerable voice that transports readers to an emotional place where tears, laughter, and hope collide. National Wellness Week 2012 Day-by-Day

Overview of Eight Dimensions

Over-arching activities about Wellness Initiative, National Wellness Week and how the Eight Dimensions help people recover and build resilience, especially when confronted with traumatic, mental health or substance use challenges.

Physical Dimension

Activities promoting healthy behaviors including smoking cessation, physical activity, nutrition, adequate sleep, and safe medication use.

Intellectual Dimension

Activities encouraging individuals to participate in the Artistic Expression for Wellness national activity such as writing poetry or developing artwork. Also, messages inspiring creativity and mentally stimulating activities, such as writing poetry or teaching others about one’s area of interest.

Spiritual Dimension

Activities encouraging activities such as mediation, prayer, or music into one’s efforts to enhance their recovery.

Social and Emotional Dimensions

Activities encouraging individuals to join the Line Dance for Wellness in communities across the country. Dancing is a great stress-reliever and also provides social interaction. Individuals can also incorporate the social and emotional dimensions in a variety of other ways, such as volunteering, joining a book club or simply spending more time with family and friends.

Activities promoting tips and support on how to manage one’s finances. Encouraging individuals to explore work opportunities that will provide satisfaction in their lives.

Activity Walking Challenge
Description The CEO of Recovery Empowerment Network will purchase pedometers for any member who wishes join her in meeting her goal of walking 10,000 steps a day for each month. Each month, the person who most consistently reached the goal of 10,000 steps a day for the month will receive a $25 gift card. Employees and members are all welcome to join the challenge. The walking challenge will add to the Recovery Empowerment Network regular program of tai chi, swimming, and gym trips.

Activity "On the Journey Together for Recovery, Resiliency and Wellness"
Description King County is sponsoring a recovery conference, "On the Journey Together for Recovery, Resiliency and Wellness," in which approximately two-thirds of the participants will be people in recovery. There will be 35–40 presentations regarding recovery, resiliency and wellness, attended by persons in recovery who experience mental health and/or substance use challenges, and persons who work in the behavioral health system. Adults and youth who participate in services as well as parents of children who are enrolled in services in King County are welcome to attend. Our goal is to present each attendee with information that will enhance their own strengths and resiliencies and to create a wellness culture within the King county mental health and substance use disorders treatment system. The themes of this conference are wellness, skill building and leadership.
