Dr. David Metzger has led global efforts to prevent HIV transmission by reducing drug use and associated risk behaviors. Internationally, his research group is involved in studies among drug users in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre, Brazil. As chair of the Substance Use Working Group for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), co-chair for HPTN Protocol 037, and chair of HPTN Protocol 058, Dr. Metzger helped develop and implement protocols for studies targeting drug-using populations, with HIV infection as the primary outcome measure. As the principal investigator for the HPTN Unit in Philadelphia, Dr. Metzger has contributed significantly to science-based efforts to confront the twin pandemics of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS in Brazil, China, Russia, Thailand, and the United States
