Summary | Correspondence reflecting MacLeish's relations with friends, literary colleagues, and government associates; notebooks (1919-1940s) containing drafts of poetry and prose, notes on travels and readings, and reflections on other writers and literature; notes, worksheets, and ms. drafts of plays, speeches and radio broadcasts, and speeches written for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Edward R. Stettinius, and Harry S. Truman; notes and ms. for classroom lectures on modern poetry given by MacLeish as Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University (1949-1962); and other papers. Includes mss. for the verse play, The Pot of Earth (1925), poems contained in Streets in the Moon (1926), the play titled J.B. (1958), and numerous other writings. The papers also document MacLeish's experiences as a literary expatriate in Europe between the wars, the politicization of his writings in the 1930s, his work (1929-1938) as a writer and editor for Fortune magazine, and his service as Librarian of Congress (1939-1944) and in several other government positions in the 1940s.
