Lung SPOREs

While the mortality rate has declined among most population groups over the past twenty years, cancers of the lung and bronchus are still the leading cause of cancer death among both males and females in the United States. According to estimates of the American Cancer Society, approximately 221,130 new cases of lung and bronchus cancer and 156,060 deaths were expected to be reported in the year 2011. The high mortality rate is due largely to the fact that a majority of these cancers are not detected until the disease has reached an advanced stage, when treatment is less effective. Because of the huge burden of lung cancer in terms of morbidity and mortality, lung cancer was an early focus of the SPORE Program. Three Lung SPOREs were funded in 1992 and additional SPOREs were added raising the number to seven in 2003, a level maintained over most of the years thereafter until 2011.
