Update from The National Center on Family Homelessness
In October 2012, The National Center merged with the Human and Social Development Program (HSD) at the American Institutes for Research (AIR), one of the world's largest behavioral and social science research organizations. Within AIR, The National Center continues to work to end homelessness for children and families under the leadership of our new Director, Dr. Carmela DeCandia. Dr. DeCandia has been with The National Center since October 2011 and is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in trauma, child and adolescent development, program development, and assessment. Dr. DeCandia will work with Ellen Bassuk, MD, founder and long-time leader of The National Center who continues to be involved as a strategic advisor, and senior leadership at HSD/AIR to further our research, program development and evaluation, and training and technical assistance initiatives.
President Lays Out Priorities in State of the Union Address
On February 12, President Obama gave his annual State of the Union address. The President laid out the Administration's priorities for the year, describing proposals that could benefit all low-income people, including families at risk of and experiencing homelessness. These proposals include increasing the minimum wage, providing universal access to pre-kindergarten, and supporting the involvement of fathers in their children's lives. The President also outlined his opposition to across-the-board cuts to domestic and defense spending known as sequestration. Read the address.
