The National Cancer Institute launched the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG®) to create a virtual network of interconnected data, individuals, and organizations that work together to redefine how cancer research is conducted. caBIG® capabilities allow researchers and clinicians to collaborate more effectively so that complex research questions may be asked and answered faster and more effectively than ever before.

Announcing the availability of the caBIG® Community Code Resource Directory
The NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT) is pleased to announce the launch of the caBIG® Community Code Resource Directory (https://cabig.nci.nih.gov/community-code/), a resource intended to promote the exchange of community-developed digital capabilities supporting cancer research.  This dynamic directory provides pointers to resources that have been developed in support of local informatics needs which may also be of value to the broader cancer research community.

The launch of the Community Code Resource Directory represents a strengthening of NCI's commitment to a collaborative development ecosystem. This directory will grow quickly to include capabilities across many biomedical domains of importance to the research community, and we encourage you to check back frequently as new resources are added. We also encourage you to suggest code to be added to this resource – you can do so by e-mailing opensource@nci.nih.gov.

Now Available: Inventory of Digital Information Resources for Researchers
A living inventory has been created to provide the scientific, biomedical informatics and health IT communities with access to data from clinical research, biospecimens, in vivo images, molecular signatures, and population studies of multiple cancer types, as well as nanotechnology applications and reference information.

New Article: NCCCP Technology Expansion in Support of Community Cancer Care
Today’s community cancer centers seek system integration to provide continuity of care and outcome measurements—tools that will help practitioners improve patient care. NCI’s Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) supports 30 cancer centers within 22 states in an effort to explore the best methods to enhance access to care, reduce cancer healthcare disparities, improve quality of care, and expand research within the community setting. New Article: Informatics and Standards for Nanomedicine Technology

New Code-a-thon Project Enhances Veterans’ Electronic Medical Records
Representatives from caBIG® (“NCI Team Blue”) took the second place prize at the Health 2.0 Developer Challenge Code-a-thon in DC on June 11. Their work demonstrates how caBIG® capabilities could be deployed to create information value for Veterans – and shows how caBIG® can create value for users with the investment of just one day of coding time. Solving Research Problems: Analyze Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Transcriptional Profiles
Read a case study to learn more about how Dr. Bradley Merrill of the University of Illinois at Chicago and his lab were able to perform their first gene expression array experiment comparing a mutant mouse embryonic stem cell line to a non-mutant control line using GenePattern, an application supported by the Molecular Analysis Tools Knowledge Center which provides bioinformatics tools for gene expression, proteomic and SNP analysis.
