Summary: The purpose of the Fulton County Violence Intervention Project (VIP) is to reduce violence in four high crime communities. The target population will be 225 youth (75 per year) between 11-21 who are at the highest risk of involvement in violent activities, specifically gang and gun violence. The project will use the evidence-based Chicago Cease Fire model as the foundation for service delivery.
Activities will be implemented to achieve goals and objectives that include changing community norms, providing alternatives to violence when youth are making risky decisions, and increasing awareness of the risks and costs of involvement in violence. Lead Outreach Workers, identified by the anchor agencies, will facilitate identification of participants, mentor and counsel youth, assess their needs, connect them with appropriate services, mediate conflicts, and curtail the retaliatory violence that threatens to break out following a violent incident. Individualized community-based activities include education support, life skills, career development, and service learning.
The Fulton County VIP will measure progress toward goals through a comprehensive plan that includes process and outcome evaluation. Qualitative and quantitative information will be collected from youth, parents, and program staff. Information will be used to strengthen practices of partnering agencies and improve program services.
