Summary: On behalf of the North Peninsula Mentoring Collaborative, project applicant Friends for Youth proposes an initiative to build mentoring service capacity to benefit more young people in the high-risk community of northern San Mateo County, California. Project goals are to enhance a collaborative of mentoring and other youth service agencies and expand the quality of mentoring services and resources for youth who are at-risk of involvement in gangs, delinquency, academic failure, victimization, and abuse. Key short-term objectives are to recruit local volunteer mentors and place more youth in safe, long-term mentoring relationships. Intermediate outcomes are to expand the Collaborative in order to offer centralized services and more mentoring opportunities, and develop sustainability plans for continued long-term mentoring to help youth reach their full potential. The key project design element is the creation of a Mentoring Resource Coordinator position to implement Collaborative activities. Strategic tasks include expanding Collaborative membership, developing recruitment methodology to meet youth needs, and assess and improve mentoring best practices in the Collaborative. Progress toward goals will be measured through established tracking, assessment, and evaluation protocols for both process and outcome/impact objectives. A Mentoring Oversight Committee will work with Collaborative partners to provide management of project plans.
