Listed below are the benefits offered by all Federal agencies. For additional information, visit www.opm.gov.

  • Federal Employees Health Benefits Plans - with costs shared by the Government.
  • Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) - which automatically covers new employees. If you are transferring from another Federal agency your retirement coverage will not change.
  • Thrift Savings Plan - a voluntary 401-k style plan which allows you to make tax deferred contributions and receive partial matching agency funds.
  • The Federal Employees Group Life Insurance plan (FEGLI) - offers low rates on premiums that are paid through payroll deductions. The U.S. Government pays one-third of the cost of this insurance.
  • Long Term Care Insurance - is also offered and carries into your retirement.
  • Annual Leave - employees accrue annual leave based on their Federal length of service.
  • Sick Leave - Employees earn sick leave at a rate of four hours per pay period, or 13 days per year.
  • Family Medical Leave - entitles employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid absence in a 12-month period for certain purposes.
  • Paid federal holidays - Employees are excused from work with pay, to observe the holidays that fall within your regularly scheduled tour of duty.

Listed below are the benefits offered by the Department of State.

  • Student Loan Repayment Program - The Department's program is one of the largest in the Federal Government. Eligibility for the program is based on the position and is reviewed annually.
  • Child Care Centers - The Department sponsors two on-site centers in: Columbia Plaza, across from Main State; and the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia.
  • Child Care Subsidy - The subsidy program is income based and income eligibility guidelines apply.
  • Convenient Employee Services - The Department has an on-site Credit Union and various bank ATMs, a fitness facility, U.S. Post Office, barber/beautician, dry cleaner, and gift/card shops.
  • Employee Consultation Service - We have licensed clinical social workers to provide counseling and referrals for personal and family concerns.
  • Flexible work hours - The Department offers alternative work schedules, telecommuting and job sharing opportunities, which varies from office to office.
  • IQ: INFORMATION QUEST - IQ is a counseling, education and referral service that helps employees manage personal and professional responsibilities (e.g., adoption, adult care).
  • Transit Subsidy Program - If you use public transportation, part of your transportation costs may be subsidized.
  • Recruitment Bonuses and Retention Allowances - We offer these incentives in designated occupations.
How to Apply:

Listed below are the instructions on how to view the status of your supporting documentation. NOTE: This feature can only be used while the announcement is open.

  1. Logon to your USAJOBS account.
  2. Click on the "Applications" tab and locate the vacancy.
  3. Locate Announcement Name (Announcement Number).
  4. Under the "Application Status" column click on the "more information" hyperlink.
  5. You will then be transferred to the "Gateway to State" application detail screen.
  6. Click on the “review and update” documents hyperlink.
  7. This page will show you what documents are required by the vacancy. Under the description column next to each document type you will see the status of your document(s).
  8. Click the “Return to USAJOBS” radio button to return back to USAJOBS.

NOTE: You will be able to see your uploaded documents immediately; however, it may take several hours before your fax documentation is reflected in the system. Check for confirmation emails for documents that you have faxed. Depending on the level of activity in the online application system, your confirmation email may be delayed. Please be aware that the confirmation email could be in your "Junk" or "Bulk Mail" folder.

The following will prevent your application materials from being processed.

  1. Missing or incomplete name or Social Security Number;
  2. Missing, incomplete, or invalid Vacancy Identification Number;
  3. Missing resume or supporting documentation;
  4. Materials received after 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the closing date of the announcement.
What to Expect Next:

Listed below are the instructions on how to view the status of your application.

  1. Logon to your USAJOBS account.
  2. Click on the "Applications" tab and locate the position.
  3. Under the "Application Status" column click on the "more information" hyperlink.
  4. You will then be transferred to the "Gateway to State" application detail screen.
  5. Under the "Vacancy Status" column it will show you the status of the vacancy announcement (e.g., if your application was received, whether the job was cancelled, if the vacancy was filled, etc.);
  6. Under the "Application Status" column it will show you the status of your application (e.g., incomplete application, not qualified - lacks specialized experience, not eligible, referred for consideration, selected, etc.).
  7. To view the status of other positions that you have applied for with the Department, click on the "View Application status" radio button located on the right side of the application. Note: You can only access this functionality while you are in Gateway to State.
  8. Click the "Return to USAJOBS" radio button to return back to USAJOBS.
