VA Researchers Earn Innovation Award

Taken from the Veterans Health Administration Highlights dated May 24, 2002

Three Health Services Research and Development investigators from the Greater Los Angeles VA Health Care System received the Innovations in Medical Education Award at the Society of General Internal Medicine’s 25th Annual Meeting. The award recognizes major contributions that have national impact on medical education. Dr. Kenneth Rosenfeld led Dr. Karl Lorenz and Dr. Jillisa Steckart on the Wit Educational Initiative – an innovative program in end-of-life medical education.

The initiative organized performances of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit at 32 medical training programs in the United States and Canada to provide medical trainees insight into the spiritual, emotional, and personal aspects of dying, through the eyes of a woman with ovarian cancer. Survey evaluation of over 2400 performance attendees confirmed the realism, emotional impact, and relevance of the program to clinical practice.
