Overview of what sequestration may mean for people with disabilities. "Sequestration," or a series of automatic federal government budget cuts totaling $1.2 trillion over the course of 10 years, will begin March 1, 2013. These cuts will be divided between defense and domestic discretionary spending. Americans with disabilities will be affected in every area from housing to special education, to health care and transportation programs.

A new report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that among the 46.0 million adults who received income-based government assistance in 2011, 30.4 percent of them had a disability. "Disability Characteristics of Income-Based Government Assistance Recipients in the United States: 2011" provides information on the types of disabilities among people 18 and older who received income-based government aid. Types of disability include vision, hearing, cognitive, ambulatory, self-care or independent living difficulties.
