Clinical Research Studies and You

Overview

Clinical research plays a critical role in enhancing our understanding of translational science and transforming basic research into improved human health. Participants in clinical research studies can help others by contributing to medical research. These online resources provide clinical research investigators with information for patients and potential study participants on the benefits of joining clinical studies.

ClinicalTrials.gov is a registry of federally and privately supported clinical trials conducted in the United States and around the world. ClinicalTrials.gov provides information about a study's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details.

The Children and Clinical Studies campaign is a cooperative effort among several NIH Institutes and Centers and the former CTSA Pediatric Oversight Committee to help the public learn more about pediatric clinical trial participation.

The NIH Clinical Center provides many online resources for patients interested in participating in research. Research Studies at the NIH Clinical Center: Why Participate? is a video from the NIH Clinical Center that explains what it means to participate in medical research.

NIH Clinical Research Trials and You explains how to participate in a research study, shares stories by patients and researchers, links to studies actively recruiting patients, and provides resources on clinical trial participation.

The Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) produced a series of videos related to clinical trial participation. The educational DVD series was made possible by CISCRP, Public Health Television and academic, medical and community health centers.

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) developed a clinical research advocacy tool intended to highlight the importance of conducting clinical research. The slides and tool include information on what clinical research is and why it is important.

The University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) partnered with a local public TV station to develop videos designed to educate the community about the value of clinical and translational research participation and to engage community members in CTSI research programs. View videos. The Institute also has developed a patient recruitment registry for research.

The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science developed a national video to promote clinical research and study participation. View this video.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, produced a patient video and brochure that explains what clinical trials are and provides advice on enrolling in studies.
