Broadband Classroom » Speed

Broadband speeds refer to the amount of data that a consumer can either download or upload in a given second. Speeds are generally measures in either kilobytes per second (Kbps), megabytes per second (Mbps) or gigabytes per second (Gbps). Keep in mind that actual file sizes vary and will affect actual download times.

Speed: Less than or equal to 200 Kbps

At this speed, a typical consumer upload experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 40 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 2 minutes and 40 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 68 hours and 16 minutes

Speed: Greater than 200 Kbps and less than 768 Kbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer upload experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 10.4 seconds.

Song (4 MB in size) - 41.7 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 17 hours and 47 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 768 Kbps and less than 1.5 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 5.3 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 21.3 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 9 hours and 6 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 1.5 Mbps and less than 3 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 2.7 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 10.7 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 4 hours and 33 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 3 Mbps and less than 6 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 1.3 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 5.3 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 2 hours and 16 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 6 Mbps and less than 10 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 0.8 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 3.2 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 1 hour and 22 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 10 Mbps and less than 25 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 0.3 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 1.3 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 33 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 25 Mbps and less than 50 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 0.2 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 0.6 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 16 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 50 Mbps and less than 100 Mbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - 0.1 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - 0.3 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 8 minutes

Speed: Greater than or equal to 100 Mbps and less than 1 Gbps

Within this speed tier, a typical consumer download experience would be:

Book (1 MB in size) - > 0.1 seconds

Song (4 MB in size) - > 0.1 seconds

Movie (6144 MB in size) - 49.2 seconds

Speed: Greater than or equal to 1 Gbps
Depending on the actual speed greater than 1 Gbps, a typical user experience would be faster than the experience at 1 Gbps.
