Program Description

This competition is designed exclusively for middle school age students who must work in teams of three or four with an adult coach. It challenges students to identify a problem in their community and solve it using science and technology. The program is designed to foster curiosity, creativity and critical thinking skills in students with diverse backgrounds, interest and abilities. Each member of two Gold Medal winning teams are awarded U.S. Savings Bonds, and one winning team receives the $25,000 Columbus Foundation Community Grant to develop and implement its idea over the next year.

Selection:
There are three judging levels. Finalists and coaches travel all-expenses-paid to Walt Disney World Resort for final judging and attend the Christopher Columbus Academy, a behind the scenes opportunity to work with Disney engineers and scientists. One team wins the $25,000 grant to take back to their community to make their idea a reality.
