North Carolina Weatherization Assistance Program
Program Description
The Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to help low-income citizens save energy and reduce expenses through the installation of energy conservation materials and the implementation of energy efficiency measures in their homes. The goal of the program is to create a safe, energy efficient and comfortable home environment for the families served. Priority is placed on providing assistance to the elderly, individuals with disabilities and families with children. The 3,352 families that benefited from the program last year saved an average of $173 per household. A household's income must be under 150 percent of poverty to be eligible to participate in the program; however, over eighty percent of the families served in North Carolina have annual incomes below $15,000. The North Carolina Weatherization Assistance Program is implemented in all counties in the State through 29 subgrantees. Local agencies determine client eligibility based on Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. Agency staff conduct an energy audit and perform diagnostic testing to determine air infiltration, heat loss, levels of carbon monoxide and identify recommended energy conservation, safety and health measures. Local agency staff and private contractors complete the work. Staff and the resident inspect the work and, if satisfied, the resident provides an approval signature.General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the state of North Carolina.If you receive Supplemental Security Income or Aid to Families with Dependent Children, you are automatically eligible to receive weatherization services.
