Program Description
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides general inpatient psychiatric services as well as mental health outpatient services. Many of these services are being integrated into primary care clinics, VA nursing homes, and residential care facilities where veterans receive mental health care.Veterans with serious mental illness are seen at all facilities and clinics where specialized programs, such as mental health intensive case management, day centers, work programs and psychosocial rehabilitation are provided.
General Program Requirements
If you have a mental health problem that VA has rated service-connected, you have a right to treatment for this one condition without enrolling in the VA Health Care system. However, as a general rule, it's always best to enroll (or qualify based on one of the exceptions in the law). Go to Basic Medical Benefits Package for Veterans to see the program requirements.Generally, in order to receive VA benefits and services, your character of discharge or service must be under conditions other than dishonorable (e.g. honorable, under honorable conditions, general). However, individuals receiving undesirable, bad conduct, and other types of dishonorable discharges may qualify for VA benefits depending on a determination made by VA.
