Transposon Biology of the Fission Yeast, Schizosaccharomyces Pombe

A postdoctoral position is currently available in a research program that studies the function and activities of retrotransposon Tf1 in the highly characterized yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Tf1 is structurally similar to retroviruses and uses mechanisms of reverse transcription and integration that are excellent models for retrovirus replication. Current work focuses on understanding how integration sites are selected and what are the consequences of integration. Saturated profiles of integration sites revealed Tf1 inserts into the promoters of stress response genes. Deep sequencing methods are being applied to determine how stress response promoters are targeted and to understand what impact this integration has on the biology of the cell. Research is also conducted on other transposons to develop technology capable of generating genome-wide profiles of gene function.
