Evaluation Criteria for Pooling Projects and Actions/Implications

February 11, 2012

The Secretariat will review proposals for Cohort Consortium pooling projects and recommend one of the following actions:

  1. Approval as a Cohort Consortium Project

    Criteria:

    • Requires prospectively collected data pooled from multiple cohorts.
    • Has strong scientific merit.
    • Does not duplicate the efforts of other ongoing consortia. (See EGRP-Supported Epidemiology Consortia, but not limited to these consortia)

    Actions and implications:

    • Secretariat will distribute the Principal Investigator's (PI/PIs) approved proposal to the Consortium membership.
    • Project will be listed on the Cohort Consortium Web site.
    • PIs may seek letters of support from the Secretariat (e.g., for grant applications).
    • PIs may request access to the Secretariat to discuss issues in completing a study.
    • PIs may request meeting and/or presentation time at the Annual Meeting.
  2. Approval as a Cohort Consortium Signature Project

A 'signature project' is a research project that has a particularly high level of innovation, timeliness, and scientific or public health impact. It is considered a priority project and has the full backing of the Consortium.

    Criteria:

    • Must meet the criteria for an approved project (described above).
    • Project has a very high potential for scientific or public health impact and is timely.
    • Project has a high potential for success and highlights the strengths of the Consortium in a unique way.

    Actions and implications:

    • Same as for an approved project, plus:
      • The Secretariat is able to devote energy and time to help the project progress, including problem solving, strategizing to obtain funding (does not guarantee funding), and providing scientific advice.
      • NCI staff may discuss the importance of the project within the Institute with the NCI Director.
  3. Not Endorsed as a Cohort Consortium Project

    Criteria:

    • Does not sufficiently meet the above criteria.

    Actions and implications:

    • No support of the Secretariat; project not distributed or listed on the Consortium's Web site.
    • PI proposer(s) are free to contact Consortium PIs on their own regarding the project.
