TTB TO CONSIDER "SERVING FACTS" PANELS FOR
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE LABELS

WASHINGTON, DC -- In response to recent inquiries, the Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) intends to initiate a rulemaking to consider the question of “Serving Facts” panels on alcoholic beverages similar to the "Nutrition Facts" panels found on food products. The panel could provide additional information on the alcohol, caloric, and carbohydrate content of alcoholic beverages. TTB will also consider the question of whether and how to treat comparative product information on product labels of alcoholic beverages.

The rulemaking will offer interested parties the opportunity to provide TTB with views on what label information, if any, would be appropriate and informative in this context. TTB will issue a formal advance notice of proposed rulemaking and begin seeking comment in the coming weeks.

TTB, a bureau of the Department of the Treasury, is responsible for the administration of the Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) Act. The FAA Act requires that alcohol beverage labels and advertisements provide the consumer with adequate information regarding a product's identity and quality, and prohibits misleading labels or advertisements that are likely to result in consumer deception.
