“First learn the meaning of what you say, and then speak.”
                                                                                            Epictetus

Please Note:  The Name This Blog contest has ended. The winner was Health Out Loud. Thanks for everyone’s participation and suggestions!

This week we launch a blog on the topic of health communication and social marketing, as part of the new Gateway to Health Communication and Social Marketing Practice. We know there are many of you out there who are trying to answer the questions about what works best (evidence-based practice). There are also many of you who have important information to share from the front lines of public health promotion (practice-based evidence). We want this blog to mainly support the community of practice-those doing the work to improve health.

In this blog we want to promote the interactive exchange of ideas. You can start by commenting on the content on this site. We also welcome your questions and suggestions about the field in general.  We are looking for inspiration, encouragement, and your ideas about what works in health communication and social marketing. Tell us what you are thinking about, and what currently challenges you. We will regularly pose questions to the blog, and seek a positive dialogue to help this community of practice grow.

Our first question is: What should we call this conversation, this blog? We want something short and memorable, that quickly identifies our field and is appropriate to our topics, and is not a name that could be confused with another communication or marketing blog. And because we’re the government, keep it clean! We know that many of you are imaginative and creative – it’s time to use it! The winner will receive a prize!

    Hope one of them works!

I like incorporating CDC in the title, given the weight that the name carries in health care circles. With that in mind, how about:

    CDCommunicaton

First, let me say how genuinely excited I am about this new resource and new blog–thank you! Second, I was so inspired that I blogged a response on SocialButterfly (my own personal blog) here: http://bit.ly/ckVrYz.

I give a shout out to the “Speaking of Health” name that’s been offered up and added some others to the list including:

    Push and Pull
    Influence Health
    The Power of Health

Until next time, I’ve just subscribed to the blog.

A blog name should be descriptive, imaginative, and you should be able to remember it after seeing it once, and spell it after hearing once.

    How about

    Healthy USA (HUSA)

I am very excited to see this Gateway come to life! We all struggle to share and collaborate outside of conferences. This is a huge step in the right direction.

Now, we just need to start including the wonderful science, practice and innovations that our states, local health departments, academia, etc. deliver! A great way to do this would be to incorporate the programs that were shared at this week’s National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing and Media.

Re: the blog name: Although I like the names suggested above, many of them relate to what we are trying to accomplish (e.g. Healthy). Since this blog is a product for us – our talented group of multi-discplinary professionals – I’d rather have the name more along Health Speaks or Health out Loud although it still resonates as more “health communications”. We need to weave a social marketing/behavior change label in here. Maybe some creative thinking will kick-in over the weekend.

There are several different ways to go depending on your ultimate goal. If you’re looking to stay branded to the CDC, then something simple like iCDC, CDCBook or CDCSpace. If you’re looking to have more of a stand alone community, iHealth or HealthChat would be appropriate. If you’re looking to launch a whole new brand the possibilities are pretty limitless. You could play off of CDC with something like ‘Community, Diversity and Caring Blog’ or you could brand something like ‘Physical Online Wellness Education and Resources (POWER)’. These are off the top of my head, please feel free to contact me if you would like more input. Congratulations on starting the blog!

    Congratulations, great effort!
    My suggestion:

    Blog title:
    PromoteHealth.com

    Blog tag lines:
    Share it, Do it.

This suggestion is based on the fact that we-health promoters/educators-worldwide are striving very hard promoting health to our people through health promotion strategies (including communication and social marketing practices).

Therefore, this blog will be a very useful hub for us to share experiences, and do it better in our own context.

    Thank you.

I love the Idea you are sharing with us your need and poeple are always willing to help. Ask your self some questions:
1/ To whom I want to address this blog exacly?
2/ What is the purpose of it (what is it for them in it?)
When You have it clear, your name must say it clearly. Some creativity always help but most of all the benefits must be outline.

    How about …

    Talk is healthy
    Healthy Talk
    Health Matters

I think the idea of a blog and building communication is really important in the health sectors. I work in the dental sector in dental marketing where I write articles about how dentists can use the Internet to communicate with their patients. We are finding that people are much more in need of communication from health professionals which is made achievable by using the Internet, blogs and a change of attitude.

Congratulations to Health Out Loud for winning the log contest. It is heart warming to know that health promoters are doing their best to promote health promotion strategies for the people.

I do agree with all the ideas you’ve presented in your post. They’re very convincing and will certainly work. Still, the posts are too short for newbies. Could you please extend them a little from next time? Thanks for the post.

How about sponsoring a MASSIVE education campaign to the general population about nutrition and healthy eating, as an effective way to control and prevent disease and illness. The rising trend of obesity in this country contributes significantly to illness and disease in this country. Until this trend is halted and reversed, obesity will consume increasing amounts of resources dedicated to health matters. I think that people need to have a rudimentary understanding about what happens in their bodies when they eat, as well as what they should eat, when they should eat and how to eat.

I think “Health Out Loud” is a great name for this blog :)

I’m a bit upset I didn’t get here in time to make my suggestion, but I still find the winner title to be very suitable!

I want to agree and respond to Jay’s comment number 90. I totally think that as a culture here in the U.S. we have “devolved” in our understanding and importance of good nutrition in our daily lives.

It is amazing how anywhere I travel in the U.S. these days, I always run into very obese people. I totally agree with Jay that until we can create a movement nationwide that halts the spread of obesity in this country, our healthcare costs will keep on skyrocketing. That movement begins with education at an early age.

This education will have to touch on aspects of nutrition such as portions, the importance of vegetables, sugar intake, carb intake, and proteins.

I agree with steves comment #93. Many health problems are cause by being overweight and can be cured just by losing weight instead of taking medications for the effects.

Looks like I am late to the party but I like Health Out Loud. Belated Congratulations, Ian!

I also agree with some of the other commentators that a focus on reducing obesity will be helpful to overall health in the country. Being overweight can lead to much health and medical problems, and it all starts with an awareness of the causes, rather than trying to handle the symptoms of various illnesses.

That is funny as I was just on the site ‘healthoutloud.com’ and somehow ended up at this blog. That is a perfect name for a health blog as it really speaks about healtlh DEVELOPMENT rather than limited health to ‘the lack of symptoms’.

This is really what is missing in the American culture as we have been taught ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it’…I hope your communications can contribute to the reversal of that and help us rise in the ranks of the healthiest countries in the world (I think we are in the lower 1st half…If I recall correctly it was around 38th in the world!).

Focusing on reducing obesity would definitely be helpful to the overall health of our country. My state, Mississippi, has the highest rate of obesity in the whole country, and also the highest rate of diabetes. The two go hand-in-hand. Kim, in post 96, was correct when she stated that, “being overweight can lead to much health and medical problems.” If more people would address the issue of weight loss, and actually take steps to do something about it, then many of the associated health issues would be taken care of in the process.
