NASS to Re-Survey Operators With Unharvested Small Grains

Issued September 30, 2010 by the Agricultural Statistics Board of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service. For more information contact Lance Honig at (202) 720-2127 or lance_honig@nass.usda.gov.

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) may release updated acreage, yield, production and stocks estimates for barley, oats, Durum wheat and other spring wheat in the November 9 Crop Production report. Previous estimates included in the Small Grains 2010 Summary released on September 30 were based on a sample of producers growing small grains this year.

When producers were surveyed earlier this month, there was significant unharvested acreage of barley and oats in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming; significant unharvested acreage of Durum wheat in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota; and a large proportion of other spring wheat acreage not yet harvested in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington. The unharvested area and expected production were included in the totals released on September 30.

NASS will re-survey respondents who previously reported acreage not yet harvested in these states. If the newly collected data justifies any changes, NASS will include updated estimates in the November 9 report. Stocks estimates are also subject to review since unharvested production is included in the estimate of on-farm stocks.

Crop Production and all NASS reports are available online at www.nass.usda.gov.
