Has the cost of providing justice for the nation changed over time? From 1986 to 2006, the total justice expenditures—federal, state, and local governments—increased 301%, from $54 billion to $214 billion. The biggest increase in expenditures occurred from 1986 to 1996, when the total justice expenditures rose 125%, from $53 billion to $120 billion. Since the mid–1990s, the increase in total justice expenditures has slowed. From 1996 to 2006, justice expenditures increased by 78%. From 2001 through 2006, justice expenditures increased by 28%.
