TeamSTEPPS: National Implementation

About the National Implementation Plan

TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based teamwork system aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals. It includes a comprehensive set of ready-to-use materials and a training curriculum to successfully integrate teamwork principles into any health care system.

At the core of the national implementation are five regional training centers at (from East to West):

  • North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in New Hyde Park, New York (NSLIJ)
  • Duke Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina (Duke)
  • Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana (Tulane)
  • University of Minnesota Fairview Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota (UM)
  • University of Washington Medicine, Seattle, Washington (UW)

These centers offer training to create a national network of master trainers, who will in turn offer TeamSTEPPS training to frontline providers in hospitals and other health care settings throughout the country. To learn more about training dates and registration, visit the Register for a Training Event Page.

The TeamSTEPPS National Implementation Project will also provide support and guidance for all TeamSTEPPS users, from the beginner through the advanced implementer, through an online user support network. This network will ensure proper implementation of TeamSTEPPS principles by offering channels of communication through Web conferences, a discussion forum, and a Web site. Trainees will also receive continuing education through new tools and measures that are researched, developed, and validated to supplement the curriculum. Collection of evaluation data at the national level will document the impact of the National Implementation of TeamSTEPPS Project.

Each year an annual collaborative of TeamSTEPPS users meets at a different location for two days of educational offerings, networking, and community building. In 2013, the collaborative, or TeamSTEPPS National Conference, will be held in June in Dallas, Texas. Please check back at this site for more information.

A phone number (312-422-2609) and E-mail ( AHRQTeamSTEPPS@aha.org) are available to answer any questions about the regional training centers and upcoming National Conference. To learn more about training dates and registration, visit the Register for a Training Event Page.
