Participate in International Exchange

The Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) sponsors long- and short-term exchange programs for both international and American high school students.

International high school students who participate in ECA's Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX), Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES), Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), American Serbia and Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE) academic year programs live with volunteer host families, attend local high schools, build leadership skills, do community service, and share their cultures with Americans. These students go through a rigorous and highly competitive merit-based selection process, and comprehensive orientation to prepare them for a successful U.S. exchange experience.

Youth Leadership programs provide participants from over 60 countries worldwide the opportunity to explore civic rights and responsibilities, youth leadership development, respect for diversity, and community activism through month-long, group exchanges.

Americans can study abroad on the CBYX, YES, and Youth Leadership programs. In addition, for students interested in foreign languages, the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program offers year and summer insitutes for learning languages like Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, Persian, among others.

Your entire family and community can participate in international exchange by hosting an exchange student.

Other exchange programs the Department of State sponsors include the Fulbright Program and the International Visitor Leadership Program. The goal of all of the ECA exchanges is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other nations.

ECA exchange program alumni encompass over 1 million people around the world, including more than 50 Nobel Laureates and over 350 current and former heads of state and government.
