Database Services

Relational Database Management Systems

The NIH Data Center provides comprehensive backup and recovery services and an excellent security environment for Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server. A wide range of application languages and interfaces are supported. Client/server and web access are supported to Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server.

Oracle RDBMS

  • An Oracle Hosting Service is supported on the Unix (EOS) systems.
  • Oracle’s Transparent Gateway to DB2 can be used to access DB2 data via Oracle-specific SQL as well a join Oracle and DB2 data.

DB2  Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)

  • DB2 is a relational database management system (RDBMS) that can be used to manage a wide variety of data, including images, audio, and video. It is supported on the NIH Data Center’s mainframe system (Titan). DB2 is especially effective at handling data that need to be stored securely, data that need to be manipulated and analyzed interactively, and data that are the basis for one-time and recurring reports. Data input, update, storage, security, extraction, analysis, and report generation are all facilities of DB2.

Other Database Services

IMS

  • IMS (Information Management System) is a Transaction Management (TM) and Database/Data Communication (DB/DC) facility that supports user-written batch processing and teleprocessing applications. IMS/MVS user application programs may be written in Assembler Language, COBOL or PL/I.

Model 204

  • Model 204 is a database management system in which access structures, programs, and data are stored together. Model 204 uses its own fourth generation language to provide a high degree of flexibility that lends itself to prototyping. Model 204 also provides interfaces to standard programming languages and supports both hierarchical and network relationships.

Note: CIT has discontinued support for Model 204 HHS customers and will not be accepting any new customers for this product.

CICS (Customer Information Control System)

  • CICS is a transaction processing system that supports a wide variety of environments. CICS, used with COBOL applications, supports a large number of users and high levels of transaction processing. As a telecommunications processor for database management systems, CICS provides support for large numbers of concurrent users accessing database applications from a variety of desktop communication devices.
