Federal CIO Vivek Kundra launched FDCCI on February 26, 2010, to address the major IT initiatives of President Obama’s FY2011 budget proposal.  More than 1,100 data centers will be surveyed for consolidation, leveraging public and private sector best practices, focusing to:

  1. Promote the use of Green IT by reducing the overall energy and real estate footprint of government data centers;
  2. Reduce the cost of data center hardware, software, and operations;
  3. Increase the overall IT security posture of the government; and
  4. Shift IT investments to more efficient computing platforms and technologies.

Primary benefits:

  • The primary benefit from improved IT equipment utilization is reduced overall energy consumption which leads to significant energy cost savings (up to 90% for virtualized IT equipment)
  • Additional benefits from virtualization and data center consolidation:
    • Reduced Facilities Maintenance and Operations costs
    • Reduced Server Maintenance and Operations costs
    • Improved Automation for Server Management and Provisioning

Citizen Services Dashboard

The Citizen Services Dashboard is an easy to use public resource designed for providing relevant data on top Federal citizen-facing services including data on service quality (such as timeliness, accuracy, ease) and customer satisfaction.  Additional potential features include the ability to provide feedback on all top citizen-facing services and the ability to promote customer service success stories happening now.

The Analysis & Design component consists of the following activities:  analyze top Federal citizen-facing services, identify key performance metrics to measure service quality and customer satisfaction, evaluate the gap between current practices and best practices across the public and private sectors, identify opportunities for leveraging technology to improve service delivery, and design a public mechanism for reporting these metrics. The Development component consists of the web development of the Citizen Services dashboard including the public-facing presentation layer and the interface with the agencies.

Open Government Initiative

President Obama believes a more transparent, participatory and collaborative government will increase accountability, enhance effectiveness and spur citizen engagement. GSA’s Open Government Initiative is designed to be a roadmap of the agency's current and on-going activities to advance a culture of openness. GSA wants to establish a significantly different type of dialogue with the American public. GSA's Open Government Plan reflects the agency's current work and the work the agency plans to do to fulfill the vision of the Open Government Directive. GSA hopes to demonstrate that GSA is listening to the public and our customers, and is aiming for openness as an operational standard within our agency.

As a priority Open Government Initiative for President Obama's administration, Data.gov increases the ability of the public to easily find, download, and use datasets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Data.gov provides descriptions of the Federal datasets (metadata), information about how to access the datasets, and tools that leverage government datasets. The data catalogs will continue to grow as datasets are added. Federal, Executive Branch data are included in the first version of Data.gov.
