Eligibility

  • The Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) collaborator must be at an institution in a country defined by The World Bank as low income, lower-middle income or upper-middle income. See The World Bank Country and Lending Groups to identify countries with low- or middle-income economies.
  • R01 (PAR08-112) applicants must have already had an R21 planning grant under the companion PAR08-113, and must have documentation that a participating partner agrees to accept assignment of the application.
  • See full "Section III: Eligibility Information" in each Announcement for full details.

Updates

  • Page Limits - New page limits are effective for due dates on or after January 25, 2010. One page is allowed for specific aims. One page is allowed for the introduction in resubmission. More information available on the Enhancing Peer Review at NIH Web site.
  • Research Strategy Section - Three sections of the current Research Plan (Background and Significance, Preliminary Studies/Progress Report, and Research Design and Methods) will be consolidated into a new single section within the Research Plan entitled "Research Strategy." The new Research Strategy section (a single PDF upload in the PHS 398 Research Plan Component of the SF 424 (R&R)), will be sub-divided into three parts: Significance, Innovation, and Approach. The Approach sub-section will include both Preliminary Studies for New Applications and Progress Report for Renewal/Revision Applications. Page limits for the Research Strategy section are:
    • SIX (6) FOR R21 (including both revised applications and new submissions)
    • TWELVE (12) FOR R01 (including both revised applications and new submissions)

Program Overview

The purpose of the Brain Disorders in the Developing World: Research Across the Lifespan program is to develop collaborative research and capacity building projects on brain disorders throughout life, relevant to low- and middle-income countries. Applicants are expected to develop innovative, collaborative research programs that would contribute to the long-term goal of building sustainable research capacity in nervous system function and impairment throughout life.

The first phase of a project consists of a two-year planning/development grant using the R21 grant mechanism. The R21 grant provides support to organize, plan for, prepare, and assemble an application for a more comprehensive R01 grant involving collaboration between developed and developing country investigators and which incorporates both research and capacity building. During the R21 award period, the applicant should:

  • further define the type and area of research to be developed;
  • conduct pilot studies;
  • develop and solidify collaborative relationships and understandings with the partners in the developed and developing countries involved.

The applicant should also provide a plan to assess current resources and needs, and a plan to address those needs, to enable the proposed research and capacity building to be successfully carried out. Training and other capacity-building opportunities should be incorporated into the research application in the context of the proposed research.
