Status: Closed

Program Overview

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows (FICRS-F) Program offered one-year mentored clinical research training experience for doctoral students and post-doctoral candidates in health-related professions from the U.S. and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as defined by the World Bank. (See The World Bank Country and Lending Groups to identify countries with low- or middle-income economies.) All research training sites were established NIH-funded research sites in LMICs, especially in Africa, Asia and South America.

Scholars Program

This program was designed for doctoral students meeting all these qualifications:

  • A strong potential for a career in global health activities and/or clinical research.
  • Advanced standing in a U.S. medical, veterinary or osteopathic school; or enrollment in a doctoral level program at a U.S. school of public health, nursing, dentistry or other school in the health sciences where global health research may be a career goal. Applicants must have strong academic records and must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Medical and osteopathic students must have completed their basic science courses and one year of clinical clerkship; public health and other doctoral students must have completed their master's degree coursework prior to beginning the fellowship.
  • Support of their home academic institution, including a committed mentor who will continue to work with the student after return to the home institution.

Each training site paired the U.S. scholar with an international (LMIC) scholar from that site selected by the site’s principal investigators through established selection criteria. The program focused on diseases and health conditions in LMICs and builds global health research capacity and networks. About 20 to 25 pairs of scholars were selected each year.

Fellows Program

This program was for post-doctoral candidates from U.S. and LMICs in active health-related programs including medical residencies and fellowships as well as health scientists with doctorate degrees. The Fellows Program was based on mentored clinical research and orientation towards global health research.

Each scholarship or fellowship lasted one year. The term began with an intensive orientation and training program on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by at least 10 months of intense research training at the LMIC site.

This program is supported by Fogarty International Center through a competitive grant to Vanderbilt University.
