Trends on Tuesdays: What the Developers are Saying About Native Platforms

Vision Mobile regularly surveys developers on mobile development trends. The infographic shows developers’ opinions of programming in Android and iOS respectively. Here are some other key findings.

According to the report, which is sponsored by AT&T, Mozilla, and Nokia, 72% of developers are now developing for the Android platform, a 4 percentage point increase compared to the company’s 2012 survey. Meanwhile, iOS shows a 5 percentage point drop in Mindshare.

iOS emerged as the highest priority platform, with 48% of iOS developers using it as the lead platform among all others. iOS, Android and BlackBerry constitute lead platforms, which are most often used as a main platform among their developers.

Agencies can find resources about mobile native app development on the Mobile Gov Wiki.

Trends on Tuesday: Tablets Taking a Bite Out of PCs

Gigaom recently compared data from IDC on fourth quarter PC tablet and PC sales and found

IDC estimates that 52.5 million tablets shipped in the final quarter of 2012. That compares to 89.8 million personal computers shipped during the same quarter…

For tablets that’s more than half the number of PCs. Gigaom says this is based on changing user preference.

But for many, particularly consumers, today’s tablets do just enough to be the next computing purchase.

As people adopt tablets for their next computer experience, they will expect anytime, anywhere experiences. Agencies should consider adopting a mobile first approach.

mPing & Mobile Weather Data

NOAA Ping Project App screenshotThe National Severe Storms Laboratory mobilized their “Precipitation Identification Near the Ground” project (PING) so you can help them collect weather data anytime, anywhere.

Are snowflakes fallin’ on your head? Are you getting pinged by hail? Tell us where you are and what is hitting the ground. NSSL scientists will compare your report with what the radar has detected, and develop new radar technologies and techniques to determine what kind of precipitation—such as snow, soft hail, hard hail, or rain—is falling where.

You can report weather data via devices on the Android and iOS platforms. You can find more apps like mPing on the USA.gov Apps Gallery.

Trends on Tuesday: Smartphone Growth Hits its Peak?

Smarthphone Shipments 2012Mobile World Live reports that there were a record 700 million smartphone shipments in 2012. While shipments in 2012 were 43 percent up on the 490.5 million shipped in 2011, the growth was below the 64 percent increase seen in the previous year.

Does this mean that smartphone adoption growth has reached its peak? One analyst actually attributes the lower percentage of growth to increased mobile phone adoption.

Strategy Analytics senior analyst Neil Shah attributed the slowing growth to maturing penetration of smartphones in developed markets such as Western Europe and North America.

Other highlights from the report are:

Samsung was again the overall mobile phone market leader with 396.5 million units and a 25 percent market share in 2012.

Apple increased shipments by 46 percent to a record 135.8 million units, gaining the same 19 percent marketshare as 2011.

Overall mobile smartphone shipments grew just 2 percent in 2012 to hit 1.6 billion units (an all-time high).

The increased market penetration of smartphones is further evidence that federal agencies need to consider  how to implement mobile solutions for customers and the public.

Pointe du Hoc Battle Site Mobile App

Pointe du Hoc Battle site app welcome screen

Pointe du Hoc Mobile App

The Pointe du Hoc mobile app serves as a tour guide and learning tool for this World War II D-Day landing site in France. The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) developed both Android and iPhone versions, which take advantage of your smartphone’s GPS features to provide a walking tour of the battle site in Normandy and

allows you to experience how U.S. Army Rangers scaled the 100 ft. cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, destroyed a critical German battery and took control of the coastal highway, playing a crucial role in the Allied success of D-Day.

While the app is intended for visitors to the battle site, once downloaded, users can take a virtual tour, which includes both audio and video elements.

ABMC plans to launch a French language version sometime this year as well as a web-based app that will be hosted at www.abmc.gov.

You can find other apps like the Pointe du Hoc mobile app at the USA.gov Apps Gallery.
