Overview:

Swimming is the second most popular sport activity in the United States. The number of reported disease outbreaks associated with pools, hot tubs, and other recreational water venues has increased in recent years. In 2007, 2.4 million U.S. health care visits resulted in a diagnosis of acute otitis externa (AOE) - also known as swimmer’s ear. Annually, clinicians spend nearly 600,000 hours treating AOE.During this COCA call, a CDC subject matter expert will review updated recommendations related to appropriate interventions to minimize the risk of AOE and other recreational water illnesses (RWIs), and discuss the importance of reporting clusters of RWIs.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to accomplish the following:

  • Describe the basic epidemiology of recreational water–associated disease outbreaks
  • List common disease syndromes and the pathogens that cause outbreaks associated with recreational water
  • Discuss updated recommendations aimed at reducing the risk of acute otitis externa and other recreational water illnesses
