Earthquake & Tsunami Awareness in Oregon
Oregon suffered considerable damage from two moderate earthquake events in 1993 and distant tsunamis in 1964 and 2011. Scientific evidence indicates that Oregon is at risk for a much larger and potentially more damaging earthquake associated with the Cascadia Subduction Zone that is expected to generate strong ground shaking and a destructive tsunami. The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan brings the hazard home and offers a teachable moment.

Oregon Emergency Management Geologic Hazards Coordinator Althea Rizzo and other state agency experts held free preparedness workshops concerning tsunamis and earthquakes in several Oregon communities during March 2012. For more information view the slides below.
​Preparedness Information
The Oregon Office of Emergency Management would like you to think about BEEing Prepared. Now is a perfect time for everyone to evaluate your family emergency plan and update or establish emergency kits. Refresh yourself and family members of established exit routes, contacts, meeting places, etc. after a disaster. If family dynamics have changed, you will need to update the emergency plan. Double check your emergency kits! Add new items and check expiration dates and replace out of date items. Every car should have a kit too. Check out the links below for information and ideas.

The recent disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in the Oregon counties of Clackamas, Jefferson, Linn, Marion, Polk, Wasco and Yamhill.

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBAs secure Web site at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Disaster loan information and application forms are available from SBAs Customer Service Center by calling (800) 659-2955, e-mailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov or visiting SBAs Web site at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing may call (800) 877-8339.

The filing deadline to return applications for property damage is June 1, 2012. The deadline to return economic injury applications is January 2, 2013.
January 2012 Winter Storm: DR-4055-OR
On March 2, 2012, President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Oregon triggering the release of Federal funds to help communities recover from the Severe Winter Storm, Flooding, Landslides, and Mudslides that occurred January 17-21, 2012.
Japanese Earthquake/Oregon Tsunami
The State continues to monitor radiation events in Japan

The State of Oregon's Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program and Radiation Protective Services are monitoring the reported radiation release in Japan. Highly sensitive radiation detectors are located in Corvallis and Portland as part of the Environmental Protection Agency's "RadNet."
