The U.S. Department of Agriculture will open the 17th season of its summer farmers market on Friday, June 1, 2012. This year’s theme, Grow Healthy, Eat Healthy, & Be Healthy, is part of USDA’s continued effort to encourage everyone to have fun, eat healthy, and enjoy at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Farmers markets are the heart and soul of many communities. They generate revenue, support local neighborhoods and help create jobs. Each time you visit the farmers market you have the opportunity to talk to local growers about where your food comes from and to reconnect and socialize with your neighbors in a family-friendly atmosphere.
USDA will also have new features for the 2012 summer market, including an on-site sign language interpreter, a hand-washing station and a USDA-certified organic vendor. As always, the market will feature vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, baked goods, kettle popcorn, local honey products, hand-made soap and more.
All farmers accept cash and some accept credit cards, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program cards; Women, Infants and Children coupons; and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons.
