If You Want To Fight

Dimensions: 20" (w) x 28" (h)

American illustrator Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) did this WWI recruiting poster (circa 1917), using the ‘Christy Girl’ icon he created of a beautiful and independent woman that was featured in many national magazines, books, calendars and patriotic posters. The artist originally captured war scenes during the Spanish-American war right at the battlefields. When he came home, he did portraits of socialites, actors and other celebrities. He also produced works of historical scenes and landscapes which were greatly admired for his brushwork skills.

This poster is indexed with the Local Identifier 4-P-52 (Record Group 4-U.S. Food Administration, Poster No. 52, 1917-1920) located in the Still Picture Records Section, Special Media Archives Services Division (NWCS-S) of the National Archives II, College Park, MD 20740-6001.
