I Wish I Were A Man
Dimensions: 20" (w) x 28" (h)
This poster, published circa 1917 and drawn by Howard Chandler Christy
(1879-1952), features the "Christy Girl" popularized during the
Spanish-American War. The "Christy Girl" is beautiful as well as independent and she appeases both the cry for feminism as well as patriotism during World War I.
The poster was produced by the now defunct Advertising Section within the Educational Division of the U.S. Food Administration. You can
find this poster in Record Group 4: Records of the U.S. Food Administration,
1917-1920 Still Picture Records Section, Special Media Archives Services
Division at Archives II in College Park, Maryland.
