“The Adventures of Today are the Memories of Tomorrow-National Parks" was one of twelve posters advertising national and state parks designed by Dorothy Waugh in the 1930's. Her designs were funded under the auspices of the Federal Art Project (FAP) which itself was a part of the Works Project Administration (WAP). The FAP's activities were designed not only to employ artists but to expand the audience for art throughout the United States. WPA/FAP artists were engaged in many areas, among them travel, to create posters that clearly reveal deep appreciation of the wonders of the diverse American landscape. The choice of imagery, colors, composition and type allowed these posters to forcefully capture the grandeur of America.
Dorothy Waugh was a native of Mansfield, Ohio. She studied at the Chicago Art Institute. After graduation, she worked at a commercial art studio. Relocating to New York, she managed a children's book department as well as being a production supervisor for the National Park Service doing copy layout and artwork. In the late 1930's she was appointed special lecturer and critic at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. While there, she taught typography and design.
