Now All Together Iwo Jima

Dimensions: 20" (w) x 28" (h)

The famous raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima was photographed by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press in February 23, 1945. Late in the war, the Treasury Department commissioned the well-known artist Cecil C. Beall to paint this poster for the Liberty Bond drive to help fund the continuing campaign in the Pacific. Six men—five U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy Corpsman—were captured in the picture planting the flag on the 546-foot dormant volcano. They are (left to right, front four) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block. The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley).

This poster is indexed with the Local Identifier 44-PA-1422 (Record Group 44: Records of the Office of Government Reports, 1932 - 1947), part of Series: World War II Posters, 1942-1945 located in the Still Picture Records Section, Special Media Archives Services Division (NWCS-S) of the National Archives II, College Park, MD 20740-6001.
