Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics, 1997, 1999, and 2000

These Bureau of Justice Statistics reports present data collected from state and local law enforcement agencies that have 100 or more sworn personnel. Information is provided for each reporting law enforcement agency on personnel, operations, equipment, computers and information systems, policies and programs, and community policing. Community policing information covers topics such as community policing and school resource officer personnel, geographic assignment, problem-solving activities, community outreach, and training. The COPS Office contributed funding and substantive expertise toward this project.

Sheriffs’ Departments, 1997 , 1999, 2000, 2003.

These Bureau of Justice Statistics reports present data describing the more than 3,000 sheriffs' departments and offices operating in the United States. Information is provided on personnel, operations, equipment, computers and information systems, policies and programs, and community policing. Community policing information covers topics such as community policing and school resource officer personnel, geographic assignment, problem-solving activities, community outreach, and training. Local Police Departments, 1997 , 1999, 2000, 2003.

These Bureau of Justice Statistics reports present data describing the more than 13,000 local police departments operating in the United States. Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies, 2000.

This Bureau of Justice Statistics report presents the results of a 2000 census of nearly 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States. It contains information on type of agency, personnel (sworn and nonsworn/ full time and part time), size of agency, largest agencies, number of employees by state, and comparisons with earlier years. The COPS Office contributed funding and substantive expertise toward the project.

Citizen Complaints about Police Use of Force

This Bureau of Justice Statistics report presents data on citizen complaints about police use of force received by large, general purpose State and local law enforcement agencies as well as on complaint dispositions. Findings presented are from new questions on formal citizen complaints about police use of force added to the 2003 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics survey. Detail is presented on the policies and procedures of large municipal police departments relating to the processing of citizen complaints and other administrative features. The report also discusses the limitations of complaints' data and the use of sustained complaints as a measure of police use of excessive force. The 2003 LEMAS survey was administered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics and sponsored in part by the COPS Office.
