U.S. Culture discussions

Our lunchtime discussions on U.S. culture provide an excellent opportunity to practice English while getting some of your nagging questions answered. Should I bring a gift when I go to a party? What does it mean when someone says, "What's up?" Is it OK to talk to people on the Metro? Your questions and comments are welcome. During the informal discussion, your colleagues and the facilitator will respond to the questions and share insights. Questions about vocabulary/idioms/pronunciation are also welcome.

Whether you are new to the States, grew up in the U.S., or have spent many years here, you're welcome to come and share your thoughts and questions. Your husbands, wives, and partners are also welcome to come, whether they're scientists or not--even if you can't attend. Feel free to bring your lunch and eat while we talk.  (This could provoke a culture question all its own: Is it really acceptable to talk while eating?)

This discussion will be held monthly, usually on the first or second Friday of the month. Please go to the "upcoming events" header to check for dates and register.

Culture discussions are currently happening in Bethesda. We are continuing to expand our efforts to bring programming to other campuses.
