To Order Copies of Photographs
Copies of audio materials found in The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip Collection may be ordered by writing to the Reference Librarian, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, 101 Independence Ave., Washington, D.C. 20540-4610.
Please detail the specific items you are interested in having reproduced and the uses to which the materials will be placed. If possible, send copies of down-loaded printouts of individual items being ordered.
Indicate the format (cassette, open reel, or DAT) you would like and the AFC CALL NUMBER listed on the item-level song record. The Library's Recording Lab charges on an hourly rate, billable in quarter-hour segments, plus a set-up fee and the costs of tape and shipping (which vary according to the format chosen). If you order materials that are not consecutive, each "skip" from one item to another is calculated as five minutes of engineering time to be added to the total. Since the Recording Lab receives no tax dollars, it operates essentially like a commercial studio in the D.C. area. As of October 1999, the lab fees are $86 per hour (billable in quarter-hour segments) plus a set-up fee and the costs of tape and shipping.
The American Folklife Center will forward your order to the Recording Lab. The lab, in turn, will send you a form to sign, indicating that you are taking responsibility for the copies you will receive. You will need to return that signed form together with the estimated pre-payment, and the lab will then schedule the work. The process usually takes from four to six weeks.

The photo entitled "Trunk of car with recording equipment," illustrating the John Avery Lomax biography, belongs to the American Folklife Center's Lomax Photo Collection. Contact the American Folklife Center (see instructions above) to order copies of this photo. All other photographs in this online presentation belong to the John A. and Alan Lomax Collection (Lot 7414) in the Prints and Photographs Division (see instructions below).
Photographic copies of Prints and Photographs Division items found in American Memory can be ordered from the Library of Congress Photoduplication Service. These reproductions (prints or transparencies) are made from high quality negatives or transparencies.
Take down the following information to place an order:
If the "REPRODUCTION NUMBER" field is filled in, note down the letters and numbers that appear there and the type of negative (glass or film) mentioned in parentheses.
If the "REPRODUCTION NUMBER" field only contains dashes, take down the letters and numbers that appear in the "CALL NUMBER" field. (The original will have to be photographed by the Photoduplication Service.)
Note down a brief caption for the item.
