Preparing for the storm

Take the Next Step
Be Prepared

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Nicholas Garlow with HHS HealthBeat.

We don’t know when the next big storm is going to hit our neighborhood. But, we can prepare and be ready ahead of time. Put a plan together for you and your family. Have the right supplies ready and available. Food, that is nonperishable and doesn’t need to be cooked, is important.

Ed Gabriel is the principal deputy Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.

“Having things such as breads, and crackers, and cereals, and canned food, and dry fruit are always good to have around the house.”

Have storage of cool water - three gallons per person, per day.

“Primarily, you want to make sure you have enough to drink. Cleaning is certainly another priority.”

Have a plan to connect with your friends and family during and after the emergency. And don’t forget things like first aid kits, waterproof matches, and flashlights with working batteries.
