About the Office of the Commissioner

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is headed by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. The following organizations report to the Commissioner.

Office of the Commissioner

Provides centralized agency-wide program direction and management services to support effective administration and FDA's consumer protection efforts within its regulatory framework and to put available resources to the most efficient use.

  • Office of the Chief Counsel
    Provides legal advice and policy guidance for programs administered by FDA. Represents the agency in civil litigation, criminal litigation, and administrative hearings
  • Office of the Chief Scientist
    Provides strategic leadership, coordination, and expertise to support scientific excellence, innovation and capacity to achieve the Food and Drug Administration's public health mission. Supports the National Center for Toxicological Research
  • Office of the Counselor to the Commissioner
    Advises the Commissioner on policy development, interpretation and integration; provides leadership in emergency and crisis management policies and programs
  • Office of Executive Secretariat
    Coordinates FDA's communications to the media, Congress, health professionals, patient advocates, and the general public
  • Office of External Affairs
    Coordinates FDA's communications to the media, Congress, health professionals, patient advocates, and the general public
  • Office of Legislation
    Advises and assists the Commissioner and other key agency officials concerning legislative needs, pending legislation and oversight activities that affect FDA.
  • Office of Minority Health
    Provides leadership and direction in identifying agency actions that can help reduce health disparities and in coordinating minority health related efforts across the Agency.

    Advises key FDA officials on strategic direction, policy, regulations, legislation, and planning and evaluation activities.
  • Office of Women's Health
    Principal advisor to the Commissioner and other key agency officials on scientific, ethical and policy issues relating to women's health.
